Kurt Vonnegut on the Banks of the Big Tennessee, 139
Maybe checking out on April 11, '07, at age 84 was lucky deliverance from times too much like those in a favored book—1984 by George Orwell—or from a body and mind grown weary of medicinal hocus pocus. Either way, if Vonnegut and Faulkner are right to suggest the past is always with us, then Kurt still walks the banks of the Tennessee River as a young grad student and ponders doomsday weapons like those created in nearby Oak Ridge.
