Welcome to New Millennium Writings, a twice-annual journal filled with vibrant imagery, word-craft and pure story-telling talent. At least, that is our aim. We look for writing that burns with energy, vision, insight and style. In short, if it... oscillates, we will publish it.
As our name implies, we are a forward-looking publication, by which we mean not just avant garde, but also adventurous in style and content.
What we at NMW look for are new ways of expressing (style) and defining (story) what it means to be human in a world that... oscillates through so many changes. Style and story, we trust, will never go out of style. Indeed, most of the writers here could be called stylists, and many have been singled out for honors.
We are not here merely to exalt the already exalted, however. In each issue, we will step over the edge of the familiar into the sometimes startling worlds of beginning writers. Six winners and finalists for the first New Millennium Awards are represented here in this issue-- the best from among 800 contest entries.
Some of the voices here are funny, others grim. Several are mystical or fantastic. All are searchingly provocative. None are reducible to a single category or school of literature. Not Minimalist, not New Age nor Freudian nor Existentialist nor Beat. Rather, they are eclectic, entertaining, stylish and smart. Some display a scruffy sort of skeptical optimism and wonder-- kind of like the fiction, come to think of it, of John Updike.
