Jacob M. Appel of New York, NY, won the $1,000 Fiction Award for his story, "Enoch Arden's One Night Stands."
Renée Ruderman of Denver, CO, won the $1,000 Poetry Award for her haunting poem, Leaving Fürth bei Nüremberg, 1936.
We had a tie for Nonfiction. Meeka McCallum of Nyack, NY, won for "The Line," her personal memoir of a woman's slavery to alcohol. Robert von Stein Redick of Belchertown, MA, won for "Uncrossed River," the true story of a young couple whose paths cross that of actor River Phoenix shortly before his death. McCallum and Redick will split the $1,000 first prize.
More than 1,400 entries were sent. Winners and honorable mentions will receive letters and certificates in coming weeks. Semifinalists also will be contacted in coming weeks. NMW Awards are presented twice annually for works of poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Judges are David Hunter, Marilyn Kallet, Jon Manchip White, Allen Wier and Don Williams, Editor.
