Ed Frankel of Los Angeles, CA, won the $1,000 New Millennium Writings Poetry Award for "An Altar for Uncle Joe," a poem about the life and death of a jazz musician.
Steve Fayer of Boston, MA, a former writer for the landmark PBS TV documentary series, "Eyes on the Prize," it turns out, has won the $1,000 New Millennium Writings Fiction Award in our Winter Awards competition. Fayer won for "Calliope," about the relationship of an aged man of color with his great-granddaughter. The story plays out against the backdrop of an upstate New York village early last century where the lives of blacks and Jews intertwine in surprising and sometimes erotic ways.
