Short-short Fiction: Norma Shainin of Washington state won for "The Famous Writer", her story of a couple who draw the dubious distinction of entertaining an eccentric genius aboard their cabin cruiser for several days. Shainin brings a light, yet probling touch to this charming read.
Nonfiction: Amy Andrews of Rochester, NY, won the $1,000 Nonfiction Prize for her creative nonfiction essay, "hide and seek," which seeks to portray her response to 'a death (she) could not fathom,' in her words. Andrews weaves strands from science and religion, explores harmonies, breaks rules and flirts with blasphemy, while finding light, finally, in science.
Fiction: BK Loren of Lafayette, CO, has won the $1,000 Fiction Prize for her story "Cerberus Sleeps," a surprisingly warm and imaginative story from the POV of the famous Greek hound who once watched over Hades, but now watches over a modern American family on the brink of disaster.
Poetry: Pamela Uschuk of Bayfield, CO, has captured the $1,000 Poetry Award for her story "Shostakovich: Five Pieces," a tonally rich and detailed evocation of Russian landscapes, events and seasons, physical and emotional, as they arise in the listener/observor of a violin performance by a loved one of the speaker.
